Subject: New prostate bill in Illinois

We just wanted to share this with you all regarding a new piece of legislation here in Illinois which seeks to assist men who are diagnosed with either prostate or testicular cancer but cannot afford treatment or further diagnosis. We know this is important to many of you, and hope you all will take to the time to read it and make known your opinion on it to the appropriate parties.

Congratulations and special thanks to long-time friends of Us TOO International, Diane Johner, Dan Moore and Bob Jelks!!!

Here is some background on Representative Flider's introduction of HB 4634 (Prostate and Testicular Cancer Program) to the Illinois General Assembly on January 29, 2007, as reported by Bob Hermann, chapter leader for Central Illinois chapter:

  • On October 11 of 2007, Diane Johner initiated a meeting with Representative Flider. Diane is the Director of Health Promotion in the Macon County Health Department and works closely with our local Us TOO chapter (Central Illinois) in a few areas where we can help.
  • Diane, Bob Jelks and Dan Moore met with Mr. Flider on October 18, 2007. The purpose of the meeting was:
    1. to make Mr. Flider aware of the disparity that exists with respect to funds provided for screening and diagnosis of underserved women in the area of breast cancer and funds provided for screening and diagnosis of men for prostate and testicular cancer;
    2. and to make Mr. Flider aware of HR 2131, The Thomas J. Manton Prostate Cancer Early Detection and Treatment Act of 2007 in the U.S. House. (SB 1275 in the Senate)
  • Mr. Flider deserves a lot of credit. Most of the people who would benefit from this legislation are not in his district but he listened, saw the disparity and the need, and took action. The result is HB 4634.
  • We will include information of HB 4634 at our February meeting and in our February chapter newsletter along with information on contacting other Illinois representatives and senators.
  • In a parallel effort we used a PowerPoint presentation on the Thomas J. Manton Bill as our topic at our January meeting with information and exhortation on contacting U.S. Congressmen.
