Please Turn Your Passion to Action Now, Voice Support for Prostate Cancer Research!
As most of you probably know, one of the top Us TOO advocacy priorities is the Prostate Cancer Research Program within the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP).
Last week, I had the good fortune of attending one of the best and most comprehensive conferences ever held on prostate cancer, with hundreds of volunteer consumer reviewers and researchers…it was the IMPaCT meeting (Innovative Minds in Prostate Cancer Today). Many Us TOO volunteers and current and past Board members were there because they have volunteered and served as active, involved proposal reviewers.
As Us TOO’s immediate past-Board Chairman and Board member Emeritus, Jim Kiefert said, "this was the world series of prostate cancer research." This meeting showed the impressive results of the Prostate Cancer Research Program within the CDMRP and demonstrates the importance of this program.
During that meeting, many of us were simply disappointed and alarmed to hear that Senator John McCain was seeking to eliminate the CDMRP, arguing it does not belong in the Department of Defense budget. I along with so many others will tell you the Department of Defense has been an outstanding caretaker of Congress’s funding for this program.
As you most likely know, Us TOO has been working with other prostate cancer organizations as well as other cancer organizations to publicly and actively support continued funding of this program. In fact, earlier this week, on a Monday morning conference call, we agreed it is time to get more active!
We do not want to lose this unique and essential program which has accelerated clinical trials and funded important pre-clinical research for recently approved treatments and for ones that are much anticipated.
Please do this, even if you have not done anything like this before. And please ask others in your life to help as well. As Jim Kiefert told us, it is his experience that his wife, his daughters and his granddaughters want to help. And they seem to get more attention and get listened to more than him when they call their elected officials!
